Mowi orders two new well boats
Two new “super green” well boats have been ordered for Mowi’s fish farming operations in Norway.
The order has been placed by DESS Aquaculture Shipping based in Grimstad and the vessels will be on long term lease to Mowi.
Each has a very large capacity and will also be equipped with four dual-fuel generator sets which will be able to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG), biogas or new types of ammonia fuel currently under development.
These large vessels are currently being built at Sefine Shipyard in Turkey, southeast of Istanbul. They are the seventh and eighth boats of this type which DESS has ordered from the Turkish shipyard.
A press release says that the vessels will be equipped with a 6,000 square metre capacity freshwater production plant, along with various lice control systems in the deck area.
The environmental aspect is particularly important to Mowi. Øyvind Oaland, the day manager at the company’s Norwegian fish farming business, said: “We have worked closely with DESS on the optimization of our boats to meet precisely these needs. I am sure they will be a success when we put them on the assignments in Norway. We are especially pleased with the LNG solution.”
Jon Are Gummedal, CEO of DESS Aqua, added: “We are in an industry that is characterised by tremendous development and the need for advanced technology is becoming larger. We are proud that Mowi is showing us the confidence to build more well boats, which will operate for many years to come.”
